Principles – Programme of Action 2015
In April 2001 the German federal government passed the German Programme of Action 2015, thereby stating the commitment
of the German government to the guiding vision of sustainable development. The goal of this federal government programme
is to make a contribution to achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Foremost among these eight
Millennium Development Goals is halving the proportion of people in the world living in extreme poverty by the year
2015. In concrete terms this means that the member states of the UN have jointly undertaken to reduce the number of
people suffering from chronic hunger from 800 million to 400 million by 2015.
This target is extremely ambitious and possibly even utopian. In May 2004 German Agro Action announced that the number
of undernourished people was only falling by 2.1 million per year. To achieve the goal of the 2002 World Food Summit in
Rome, this process would need to happen twelve times as quickly. Only if the number of hungry people were falling by 26
million every year would the world be on target to achieve the Millennium Goals by the year 2015.
Germany launched its Programme of Action 2015 in 2001 as part of the fight against poverty, a shared global challenge.
The German federal government has strategically aligned its contribution with the UN Millennium Development Goals.
